Press Release: Ryan Bergert Joins San Diego Padres in MLB Call-Up
MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Ryan Bergert, a former right-handed pitcher for West Virginia University (WVU), has been called up to the Major Leagues by the San Diego Padres, the team announced on Friday. Bergert will bolster the Padres bullpen as they face off against the Tampa Bay Rays.
Originally from Canton, Ohio, Bergert started the 2023 season with Triple-A El Paso, where he was the opening day starter for the Chihuahuas. In five starts this season, he holds an 0-1 record with a 5.16 ERA, accumulating 24 strikeouts over 22.2 innings pitched. A sixth-round draft pick by the Padres in 2021, Bergert has spent five seasons in the minor leagues, pitching a total of 340.2 innings while achieving 380 strikeouts and a 4.33 ERA. Notably, he ranks as San Diego’s 21st prospect.
During his time at WVU, Bergert showcased his talent with a record of 4-1 and an impressive 2.30 ERA across 21 appearances. He struck out 68 batters in 58.2 innings before his collegiate career was curtailed by the COVID-19 pandemic and subsequent Tommy John surgery.
With this call-up, Bergert becomes the 30th former Mountaineer to reach the Major Leagues, joining Victor Scott II of the St. Louis Cardinals as the notable alumni currently active. Additionally, he is the second pitcher from the Padres’ 2021 draft class to make his MLB debut, following Jackson Wolf.
