London Marathon 2025 Sets Sights on Record with 56,000 Participants
London, April 27, 2025 — The 2025 London Marathon is poised to make history as more than 56,000 runners hit the streets of the capital, potentially breaking the record for the world’s largest marathon. On a warm, sunny day with temperatures reaching 22°C, participants, including celebrities and various costume-clad runners, tackled the iconic 26.2-mile route.
With the existing record held by the TCS New York Marathon at 55,646 finishers, many are optimistic about achieving a new milestone in London. As runners navigated the challenging course, the heat proved to be a topic of concern; Lindsey Burwell, participating in her first London Marathon, remarked on struggling due to the weather despite finishing in 4 hours 30 minutes.
Among the emotional moments, David Stancombe completed the race to honor his daughter Elsie, tragically murdered last year, finishing in under four and a half hours. Similarly, Sergio Aguiar ran in memory of his daughter Alice, while raising funds for a new playground at her school. The support from family and friends buoyed runners as they crossed the finish line, with many sharing heartwarming stories of resilience.
The day’s highlights also included a colorful array of costumes, with participants dressed as everything from a giant pizza to a set of test tubes, aiming to set records for the fastest marathon in costume.
Sebastian Sawe clinched the men’s elite title in 2:02:25, while Tigst Assefa became the women’s champion at 2:15:50, securing her place among marathon elites. The event culminated in a spirited atmosphere as thousands cheered along the route, underscoring the community spirit and camaraderie that define the London Marathon.
