Vancouver Street Festival: 11 Killed in Car-Ramming Incident, PM Expresses Canada’s Heartbreak – Latest Updates

Tragic Car-Ramming Attack at Vancouver Festival Claims 11 Lives

Vancouver’s interim police chief, Steve Rai, confirmed on Sunday that the death toll from a car-ramming incident during the Lapu Lapu Day festival has risen to 11. Dozens more attendees sustained injuries, some severe, and were swiftly transported to nine local hospitals. The victims included both males and females, with "young people" among them.

The festival was scheduled to conclude at 8 PM PT, yet many were still present when the tragedy occurred. While the suspect remains unnamed as charges are pending, Chief Rai revealed that he has a significant history of interactions with police and healthcare related to mental health issues. Importantly, authorities found no evidence suggesting that the incident was an act of terrorism.

Rai noted that police had consulted city officials and festival organizers beforehand, concluding that a heavy law enforcement presence was unnecessary for the event. Moving forward, police will collaborate with city officials to more closely examine the planning of such events.

Eyewitness Sheldon Nipshank recounted the harrowing scene as he witnessed individuals injured and awaiting urgent medical assistance. Festival organizer RJ Aquino expressed deep sorrow over the incident, emphasizing the need for transparency in providing support to affected individuals and warning against misinformation circulating online regarding personal information.

Political figures, including Prime Minister Mark Carney and former Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, extended their condolences to the victims’ families while emphasizing the solidarity of the Canadian community with those impacted. Community organizations, such as Migrante BC, voiced their devastation, urging for collective healing and support during this troubling time.

As the investigation continues, the community mourns the loss and seeks to reclaim the joy that the festival was meant to celebrate.
