West Virginia Football Adds Transfer WR Justin Smith-Brown
MORGANTOWN, WV – The West Virginia Mountaineers football team has bolstered its wide receiver corps with the addition of South Carolina State transfer Justin Smith-Brown, marking the second spring transfer portal addition to the team. This move follows last week’s signing of UNC transfer Christian Hamilton.
The 6’1" Smith-Brown, a Cocoa, Florida native and Space Coast High School alum, arrives in Morgantown with promising statistics from his time at South Carolina State. Initially unranked as a recruit, Smith-Brown first made his mark during the 2022 season, recording five receptions for 90 yards and a rushing touchdown. His production significantly increased in the 2023 season, where he achieved 22 receptions for 357 yards and three touchdowns. Smith-Brown’s breakout season was in 2024, during which he amassed 749 yards and four touchdowns on 54 receptions, including two games exceeding 100 receiving yards.
West Virginia head coach Rich Rodriguez emphasized the need for enhanced competition in the wide receiver room during spring practice. With the statement that "we don’t have any starters," wide receiver coach Ryan Garrett echoed these sentiments, highlighting a focus on building depth before the upcoming season. The Mountaineers see the addition of Smith-Brown as a strategic move to address these concerns.
Smith-Brown enters the WVU program with one year of eligibility remaining, aimed at making an immediate impact as the Mountaineers prepare for the challenges ahead. The team looks to strengthen its passing game, ensuring they are competitive in the upcoming season, while Rodriguez remains active in seeking talent from the transfer portal. For Smith-Brown, it’s a new beginning, as he expressed his excitement on social media, declaring, "To God be the glory. Let’s do it Morgantown!"
