After the Attack, Vancouver’s Filipinos Embrace ‘Kapwa’—the Spirit of Togetherness

After a tragic incident where a car crashed into a crowd at a Filipino festival in Vancouver, community members quickly mobilized to support the victims. Diana Silva, a vendor at the event, felt compelled to help following the tragedy, which resulted in 11 fatalities and dozens of injuries. Local Filipino Canadians, including chef TJ Conwi, illustrated the principle of “kapwa,” highlighting how interconnectedness drives their community to act in times of need.

Conwi, who has lived in the area for 30 years, emphasized the community’s automatic response to support one another, stating that the togetherness exhibited at vigils is profound. The suspect, Kai-Ji Adam Lo, has been charged with multiple counts of second-degree murder and has a history of mental illness.

The Filipino community, the third-largest Asian immigrant group in Canada, has significant representation in Vancouver, with a population of approximately 141,230. Many have immigrated since the 1960s, often filling roles in healthcare and nursing. The festival, pivotal for community gathering and celebrating cultural heritage, was dedicated to Datu Lapu-Lapu, a symbol of resistance.

In response to the attack, efforts to provide meals and resources emerged quickly. Conwi’s group of chefs coordinated meals for grieving families, reflecting the community’s resilience. Silva, owner of a local bakery, contributed by donating cupcake proceeds to victim fundraisers. Community leaders noted an outpouring of support from beyond their ethnic group, emphasizing the significance of solidarity during a time meant for celebration. As they process the tragedy, community members continue to unite, demonstrating their caring nature and commitment to uplifting one another.
