Tragic Storm Claims Lives of NCTC Eagle Eaglets
SHEPHERDSTOWN — In a heartbreaking incident on April 19, three eaglets, hatched in late March, succumbed to a violent storm that led to the collapse of their nest at the National Conservation Training Center (NCTC). Observers monitoring the Eagle Cam witnessed the mother, known as Belle, hunkered down with her young moments before the nest fell approximately 90 feet during unexpected winds that reached an estimated 75 mph.
Randy Robinson, an outreach coordinator at NCTC, confirmed the tragedy via chat, revealing the eaglets were discovered scattered beneath the tree where their nest once stood. The sudden winds were described as resembling a microburst, catching both the birds and their devoted followers off guard.
The eaglets were the offspring of parents Belle and Scout, and the nest had been a focal point for bird enthusiasts since 2006. Year after year, viewers have eagerly awaited the hatching of new chicks. Despite proactive measures taken by NCTC, including the construction of an alternative nesting platform, it remains uncertain if the eagles will return for another breeding season.
