West Virginia Football Roster Faces Dramatic Overhaul
MORGANTOWN, WV – The West Virginia Mountaineers’ football team is undergoing a significant transformation as head coach Rich Rodriguez contends with a wave of roster changes. Since taking over, Rodriguez has seen an exodus of 43 scholarship players through the transfer portal, alongside 19 seniors who graduated. In response, the program has welcomed 38 transfers and an additional 11 recruits from junior colleges and high schools.
The spring practices were vital not only for implementing basic schemes but also for assessing the entire roster. With 24 scholarship players leaving by the end of spring, the coaching staff is now focused on filling those gaps with new talent. Notably, only two players who departed were brought in by Rodriguez himself—running back LJ Turner and tight end Johnny Pascuzzi.
In this "win-now" era, the aim is to assemble a team that embodies Rodriguez’s vision and culture. The coaching staff is actively targeting potential starters and younger players across various positions, including offensive line, wide receiver, and defense. With a goal to finalize the roster by July, the Mountaineers are preparing for the upcoming season with renewed determination and a commitment to competition.
