Governor Morrisey Declares May as No-Kill Shelter Month in West Virginia

In a significant move towards animal welfare, Governor Patrick Morrisey has declared May as West Virginia No-Kill Shelter Month, aiming to transform the state into a “no-kill” haven for pets this year. This proclamation has garnered widespread support across the political spectrum, with many residents enthusiastic about the initiative.

According to the Best Friends Animal Society, West Virginia achieved an impressive 89.7% save rate for shelter pets in 2024, with over 80% of its 48 shelters either maintaining or attaining no-kill status. However, to realize this goal entirely, an estimated 1,100 additional animals must be adopted.

Julie Castle, CEO of Best Friends Animal Society, commended Morrisey’s initiative, stating that collective efforts from community members, officials, and animal welfare organizations are essential for success. To support this movement, residents are urged to adopt pets, engage in community cat programs, spay or neuter their animals, and volunteer or donate to local shelters.

The commitment to adopting pets comes with responsibilities, including time, attention, and financial costs. Morrisey’s objective is both admirable and achievable with community involvement. Let’s work together to give West Virginia’s shelter animals the loving homes they deserve.
