Mountaineers Suffer Heartbreaking Walk-Off Loss to Wildcats
MANHATTAN, Kan. – The No. 12 West Virginia University baseball team faced a dramatic defeat against Kansas State, falling 8-7 at Tointon Family Stadium on Friday night. This loss marks WVU’s second consecutive walk-off defeat, dropping their record to 39-9 overall and 18-5 in the Big 12. Meanwhile, Kansas State moves to 29-20 and 15-10 in conference play.
The Mountaineers initially took control, scoring three runs in the fourth inning. Junior Sam White delivered an RBI double, followed by senior Jace Rinehart’s impressive two-run home run, his eighth of the season. The team extended its lead in the fifth with another RBI single from junior Logan Sauve. However, the Wildcats began to stir in the seventh with a two-run homer, closing the gap.
WVU responded with two additional runs in the eighth, bolstered by a fielder’s choice and an error, taking a 7-5 lead into the final inning. Despite this, Kansas State mounted an incredible comeback in the ninth, starting with four consecutive hits that quickly brought two runs home. A fielder’s choice and a couple of singles allowed the Wildcats to tie the game before clinching the comeback victory with a final hit.
Despite the tough loss, the Mountaineers tied a program record by executing five double plays throughout the game. The two teams are set to face off again on Saturday, with the first pitch scheduled for 5 p.m. ET.
