West Virginia Governor Demands Investigation into NCAA Tournament Exclusion: ‘A High-Level Robbery’

Governor Morrisey Launches Investigation into NCAA Tournament Selection Following West Virginia Snub

Charleston, WV – In a bold move, West Virginia Governor Patrick Morrisey, alongside Attorney General JB McCuskey, held a press conference on Monday to announce an investigation into the NCAA Tournament selection committee. This decision comes in the wake of West Virginia University (WVU) being excluded from the 68-team tournament field, despite widespread expectations that they would qualify.

"Nearly every single sports fan, pundit, and Bracketologist had WVU as a shoo-in for the tournament," Morrisey stated, labeling the committee’s decision a "miscarriage of justice" and a "robbery at the highest levels." The Governor specifically pointed out the controversial inclusion of the University of North Carolina (UNC) over WVU, highlighting potential conflicts of interest given that UNC athletic director Bubba Cunningham serves as the selection committee chair.

Morrisey contrasted both teams’ performances, emphasizing that UNC’s resume included a staggering 1-12 record in Quadrant 1 games, while WVU appeared to have the stronger schedule. Citing these discrepancies, he urged McCuskey to investigate possible "backroom deals, corruption, bribes, or any nefarious activity" that may have influenced the selection process.

While details of the investigation remain unclear, Morrisey emphasized the need for "objective criteria" for tournament inclusion. WVU was notably the first team left out while UNC was the last team included. UNC’s athletic director, though he had to recuse himself from discussions regarding his own team, was present during the selection process, raising additional questions about the integrity of the decision.

As the investigation unfolds, both officials are committed to ensuring fair practices in NCAA decisions, stating, "We earned a spot in the NCAA Tournament. You can’t really make an argument any other way."
