Texas Bill Mandating Ten Commandments in Public Schools Advances to Governor’s Desk

A Texas bill requiring the Ten Commandments to be displayed in every public school classroom has progressed towards potential approval by Governor Greg Abbott, following its passage in the state House of Representatives with an 82-46 vote. The legislation, officially designated as SB 10, faced amendments proposed by Democratic lawmakers, including provisions for language diversity and local opt-in options. Ultimately, the bill will return to the Senate for final approval after the House added an amendment stating that the state, not individual districts, would handle any legal challenges.

Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick has emphasized the bill as a priority, arguing that it aligns students with the foundational values of the nation’s forefathers. If signed by Abbott, schools must display the Commandments in a specific format starting in the 2025-26 school year, with provisions for donations or district funding for the displays. However, the bill lacks enforcement mechanisms, leaving compliance uncertain.

Critics, such as state Rep. James Talarico, raise concerns about the exclusivity of enforcing religious texts in public schools, arguing it may alienate non-Christian students. Legal challenges are anticipated, similar to those faced in Louisiana and Arkansas, where similar laws have emerged but are also facing constitutional scrutiny. Anti-religious bias advocates emphasize the concern that such measures diminish the significance of other beliefs and may foster a hostile environment.

Additionally, other religious legislation is moving through the Texas House, such as allowing periods for prayer and Bible reading, also expected to receive Abbott’s approval. Critics view these legislative trends as part of a broader strategy that risks alienating non-Christian students and intensifying divisions within school communities.
