Many Small Businesses Are Rejecting Tariff Price Increases—And It’s Hurting Their Bottom Line.

Jeremiah Chamberlain and his wife, Harriet, launched their 3D-printing business, Corvidae Creations, amid unforeseen challenges stemming from U.S. tariffs on Chinese imports, which have fluctuated significantly since President Trump’s trade policy changes. The tariffs increased to 30% from a prior peak of 145%, impacting the prices of essential 3D printer components. Chamberlain responded by shifting to American and Canadian suppliers, resulting in lower production costs despite a loss of certain color options.

Chamberlain’s resolve mirrors the sentiment of many small businesses striving to maintain prices amid rising costs. He emphasizes the importance of affordable toys—like dragons and dinosaurs—that his company produces. Similar to Chamberlain, other entrepreneurs like Carla Minervini of All Fired Up pottery studio refuse to raise prices, opting instead to adapt their product range and cannibalize lower-margin items. She has reiterated her commitment: “I would sell everything off…before I would increase my prices.”

Many businesses are feeling pressured. Dan and Ashley Jones of Jeans Day Apparel have had to let go of part-time workers due to increased supply costs, which have risen by about 3%. They find themselves overwhelmed, uncertain of future operations. Similarly, Amy Grows of Camas Creek Soap Company is also eliminating product varieties to maintain reasonable prices in the wake of rising raw material costs.

In contrast, larger companies like Home Depot have more flexibility and have currently ruled out price hikes. However, other retailers like Target view price adjustments as a last resort. Most smaller businesses, operating on thin margins, express anxiety over the tariff situation, with many predicting they will have to eventually increase prices or make difficult staffing decisions to survive economically.
