One in Four Jobs at Risk from AI Transformation, Report Warns
Published: May 26, 2025
UNITED NATIONS (APP) – A groundbreaking study by the UN’s International Labour Organization (ILO) and Poland’s National Research Institute reveals that one in four jobs globally is at risk of transformation due to Generative Artificial Intelligence (GenAI). The research emphasizes that while widespread job losses are unlikely, significant changes to job descriptions and roles are expected, particularly affecting women and clerical workers.
GenAI technologies, capable of producing text, images, and coding based on user prompts, are poised to alter everyday tasks across various occupations. The ILO-NASK index analyzed nearly 30,000 job descriptions and discovered that jobs at the highest risk of task automation represent 9.6% of female employment in high-income countries, nearly three times the proportion for men. Globally, 4.7% of women’s jobs are categorized as high-risk compared to 2.4% for men, largely due to women’s predominant roles in clerical and administrative positions.
The report warns that while these roles may not vanish completely, partial automation could lead to diminished job quality, fewer responsibilities, stagnant wages, and increased job insecurity. Without targeted training, particularly for women, many workers may struggle to adapt to these changes.
The study highlights significant regional disparities: 34% of jobs in high-income countries are in occupations vulnerable to GenAI, compared to just 11% in low-income countries. Middle-income areas, such as Latin America and certain parts of Asia, are moderately affected, while regions like sub-Saharan Africa might face serious risks if AI adoption escalates without precautionary measures.
The ILO calls for urgent action from governments, employers, and labor organizations to enhance digital skills and training, especially for women, and to incorporate AI strategies into broader labor market and educational policies.
