Coach Dave Marshall Prepares for Battle Against Cystic Fibrosis All-Star Classic

PARKERSBURG — Fresh off a Class AAA state championship victory, Bridgeport High School head coach Dave Marshall spent Monday evening at Parkersburg South’s Rod Oldham Athletic Center, gearing up for the 22nd Battle Against Cystic Fibrosis All-Star Classic. His 12-member team includes three of his own players—Landon Sanders, Phoenix Sickles, and Jack Spatafore—alongside local talents Mason Nutter and Navi Hewitt from Parkersburg South and others from surrounding schools.

Marshall, who has amassed an impressive coaching record since 2019 and previously led the girls’ team for 19 years, became only the third coach in West Virginia history to win both boys’ and girls’ state titles at the same school. Despite his accolades, he admits that he’s still learning about cystic fibrosis, a cause the classic supports.

Set to compete against a team featuring athletes from various local high schools, Marshall expressed gratitude for being involved in such a meaningful event. "It’s just nice to be able to work with these kids," he said. He recalled his long-standing relationship with the Parkersburg basketball community, noting his fondness for the local gym where he experienced both victories and losses.

As a coach known for emphasizing defense, Marshall is aware that the all-star format typically favors high-scoring offensive play. "I’m one of those guys that feels like I’m coaching every possession," he joked, acknowledging the challenge of adapting his coaching style for the all-star setting.

The game aims to raise awareness and funds for cystic fibrosis, resonating deeply with the community. With a record of 14-7 in the series, Marshall’s team seeks a third consecutive win in this prestigious event.
