West Virginia University Baseball Achieves Historic NCAA Tournament Milestone
MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – For the first time in 61 years, the West Virginia University (WVU) baseball team will make its third consecutive appearance in the NCAA Tournament. This momentous achievement is celebrated just as the team faces off against Kentucky in the Clemson Regional on Friday.
Historically, the Mountaineers hadn’t qualified for the tournament three years in a row since the early 1960s. Current head coach Steve Sabins, who succeeded Randy Mazey, recognizes the significance of this accomplishment, stating, “It’s an honor to be at the helm as we reach this milestone.”
WVU’s resurgence began under Mazey in 2017 after a two-decade absence from the NCAA regionals. Since then, the program has captured a Big 12 championship, reached a Super Regional, and accumulated a record 41 wins this season, showcasing remarkable progress over the past few years.
The school’s successful journey includes contributions from key figures such as veteran administrator Matt Wells and benefactors like Ken Kendrick. Their involvement has transformed Wagener Field at Kendrick Family Ballpark into a premier college baseball venue, making these successes possible.
Attendance at games has surged, evidenced by a record-breaking crowd of 9,639 at a recent game between WVU and Marshall—possibly the largest gathering ever for a college game in West Virginia.
Coach Sabins emphasizes the depth of this year’s team, attributing their successful path to the relentless determination of players seeking opportunities. Moreover, with eight teams from the Big 12 making this year’s 64-team tournament, the league showcases its growing competitiveness.
As WVU prepares for the upcoming tournament, anticipation builds for what the future holds. Under Coach Sabins, the Mountaineers are indeed poised for continued success in collegiate baseball.
