Olympic gymnastics legend Mary Lou Retton was arrested earlier this month for driving under the influence (DUI) after erratic driving was reported in her Porsche. The incident occurred on May 17, and police reports indicated that the 57-year-old was slurring her words upon being stopped. A container of wine was reportedly found in the passenger seat, and Retton declined to take a breathalyzer test. She was later released after posting a $1,500 bond.
Retton, a West Virginia native, captured the nation’s heart during the 1984 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles, winning five medals, including a historic gold in the all-around competition—marking the first individual Olympic gymnastics medal for an American. Her daughter Kelley revealed that Retton was “fighting for her life” and initiated a fundraiser to help with medical expenses, which raised nearly $500,000. Though she has made a recovery, Retton expressed that she had “faced death in the eyes” during her illness.
