A Mexican family faces the threat of deportation, which could sever their access to essential medical care for their 4-year-old daughter, identified as S.G.V. Born with short bowel syndrome, she relies on life-saving intravenous treatment known as Total Parenteral Nutrition (TPN). Deysi Vargas, her mother, expressed grave concerns over the potential loss of treatment, stating, “If they deport us…she will die.” The family’s legal immigration status was abruptly revoked, prompting a fierce battle for reinstatement.
S.G.V. receives TPN therapy at home, connected to a gastric tube for at least 14 hours nightly, and carries a portable unit during the day. The equipment is restricted to U.S. usage, presenting complications should their family be forced to return to Mexico, where S.G.V. previously struggled to survive medically. After entering the U.S. legally in July 2023 for medical treatment, the family was granted humanitarian parole. However, all changed with an email from the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), which indicated their status was terminated, insisting they leave the U.S. immediately.
Vargas and her nonspeaking partner, who has no significant legal issues apart from a pending charge arising from a misunderstanding at a hospital, have appealed this decision. Attorneys argue that the DHS made an error in terminating their status without proper consideration of S.G.V.’s dire health needs. Compounding their worries, DHS continues to send notices about the family’s termination despite assurances that they’re not currently facing deportation. Describing their situation, attorney Gina Amato said, “They’re very much in limbo, and they’re terrified,” underscoring the precarious circumstances around their legal status and the impending loss of critical healthcare for the child.
