WVU’s Griffin Kirn Named Student-Athlete of the Week
MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – West Virginia University (WVU) baseball standout Griffin Kirn has been honored as the WVU Student-Athlete of the Week, presented by University Apartments. Kirn’s exceptional performance in the Big 12 Championship quarterfinals saw him throw a complete game against Cincinnati, leading the Mountaineers to a decisive 10-3 victory. The Quincy, Illinois native struck out nine batters and issued just one walk while allowing three runs and scattering eight hits.
Earlier in the week, Kirn was recognized for his outstanding season as a member of the All-Big 12 First Team and his impressive showing against the Bearcats earned him a spot on the All-Tournament Team. The Mountaineers, now turning their sights to the NCAA Clemson Regional, will face No. 3 seed Kentucky on Friday at noon, with the game airing on ESPNU.
During the Big 12 Championship, the Mountaineers finished with a 1-1 record. After their triumph over Cincinnati, they lost in the semifinals to No. 4 seed Arizona, 12-1. Key contributions included senior Kyle West hitting his 10th home run and senior Brodie Kresser driving in three runs.
This marks WVU’s 17th NCAA Regional appearance and their third consecutive berth, a feat not achieved since 1961-1964. Notably, the team has a long-standing rivalry with Clemson, facing them with a record of 2-11 but managing a series win in 2015.
Additionally, WVU’s track and field team is preparing for the NCAA East First Rounds in Jacksonville, Florida, showcasing several athletes slated to compete in events including the women’s 800 meters and 10,000 meters. Freshman Joy Naukot ranks third in the East for the 10,000 meters, while graduate student Sarah Tait holds the fourth spot in the steeplechase.
As both teams gear up for their respective competitions, excitement remains high for WVU sports.
