Boeing is set to resume airplane deliveries to China next month, as stated by CEO Kelly Ortberg, following a pause during the U.S.-China trade tensions under the Trump administration. Ortberg noted that China has indicated readiness to accept deliveries again, which are essential for Boeing, a significant U.S. exporter that plays a role in reducing the nation’s trade deficit.
Despite ongoing tariffs on components imported from countries like Italy and Japan for Boeing’s Dreamliner planes, Ortberg believes these tariffs will not have a permanent impact. He explained that the only tariffs the company will incur are for deliveries to U.S. airlines, as much can be recouped when planes are exported.
Boeing is also looking to increase production of its popular 737 Max jet, pending Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) approval, which had previously limited output after safety concerns arose from manufacturing issues. Ortberg expressed confidence that the company could produce 42 Max jets per month by midyear, with a goal of reaching up to 47 jets later in the year.
Additionally, the long-awaited Max 7 and Max 10 variants are expected to receive certification by the end of the year, a move that could further strengthen Boeing’s market position. Airline executives, including United Airlines’ CEO Scott Kirby, have praised Ortberg’s leadership, suggesting that the company is beginning to recover from its recent crises, including two fatal crashes involving the Max aircraft. Kirby cautioned, however, that supply chain challenges continue to impact overall aircraft deliveries.
