105-Year-Old Thai Athlete Inspires with Gold at World Masters Games
RAYONG, THAILAND – Sawang Janpram, a remarkable 105-year-old athlete, is proving that age is merely a number. Rising at 5:30 AM for a well-balanced breakfast of eggs, protein, and fresh fruits, he heads to the beach or local stadium with his 73-year-old daughter Siripan, where they partake in a rigorous training routine.
Sawang’s dedication recently paid off at the World Masters Games in Taiwan, where he claimed four gold medals in the men’s over-100 category, dominating events including discus and javelin. His 100-meter dash time of 38.55 seconds further underscores his extraordinary capabilities, especially as he was the oldest competitor in attendance.
The secret to his longevity, he says, lies in regular exercise, a healthy diet, a positive mindset, and good hygiene. Despite the challenges of age, Sawang’s enthusiasm for sports blossomed at 97, encouraged by Siripan, who invited him to watch her compete. Since then, he has participated in 21 competitions, amassing an impressive collection of 78 medals.
While occasionally feeling fatigue, the bond with his daughter keeps him motivated. Together, they emphasize the importance of maintaining an active lifestyle, especially for the isolated elderly population in Thailand. Siripan notes that the lack of support often discourages older individuals from exercising, contributing to isolation and loneliness at home.
With a focus on healthy meals, including fresh vegetables and light fish dishes, Sawang remains fit and vibrant. His journey serves as a testament to resilience, inspiring others across generations to engage in fitness.
As both he and Siripan prepare for the upcoming Asia Masters Athletics Championships in India, Sawang’s message resonates: “Exercise with friends; it’s fun and fulfilling.” His remarkable story encourages all to embrace fitness, regardless of age.
