Jason Martinez Joins WVU Men’s Basketball as Assistant Director of Strength and Conditioning

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – West Virginia University has announced the appointment of Jason Martinez as the new Assistant Director of Strength and Conditioning for the Men’s Basketball program.

A native of Saratoga Springs, New York, Martinez brings a wealth of experience to his role, having previously served in similar positions at several institutions including North Texas, Iona, East Carolina, Wake Forest, and Lindenwood. Most recently, he spent two successful seasons at North Texas, where the team achieved notable milestones. In the past season, the Mean Green accumulated 27 wins, advancing to the semifinals of the NIT. They finished third nationally in scoring defense, allowing just 60.1 points per game, and were recognized for their effective offense and defense within the American Athletic Conference (AAC).

Under Martinez’s guidance, North Texas experienced its second-best win total in school history, with five players earning all-conference honors. His first season at UNT also witnessed 19 victories and a significant presence in the NIT, showcasing the team’s upward trajectory under his strength and conditioning strategies.

Head coach Ross Hodge praised Martinez’s ability to challenge athletes while fostering trust and meaningful relationships. "He is always eager to learn and find innovative training techniques to benefit our athletes," Hodge stated.

Before his tenure at North Texas, Martinez worked under esteemed coach Rick Pitino at Iona, leading the Gales to 27 wins and capturing the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference titles. He has a solid academic background, holding a master’s degree in human performance from Lindenwood University and a bachelor’s degree in exercise science from Manhattan College.

Martinez’s blend of experience and enthusiasm promises to significantly enhance the performance of WVU’s basketball program.
