Wood County Sheriff’s Department Receives Funding from State Treasurer
Parkersburg, WV – The Wood County Sheriff’s Department has received a check for $5,078.75 from the West Virginia State Treasurer’s Office, as part of funds generated from auctions of unclaimed, seized, or outdated firearms. This funding was presented by State Treasurer Larry Pack during his visit to the region, which also included a check for Jackson County Sheriff’s Department totaling $5,333.75.
Law enforcement agencies can transfer firearms—used in crimes or unclaimed due to various circumstances—to the Treasurer’s Office for auction to federally licensed dealers. These transactions not only clear storage spaces but also provide vital financial support to local departments. Pack stated that this year, his office expects to return around $500,000 to law enforcement across West Virginia, benefiting departments struggling with tight budgets.
Sheriff Rick Woodyard plans to allocate the funds to the department’s “Special Law Account,” which assists with necessary equipment purchases and facility upgrades. The support received through this initiative has proven essential for enhancing operational capabilities in local law enforcement.
