Griffin Kirn Sparks Mountaineers’ Comeback Victory
MORGANTOWN, WV – West Virginia’s Griffin Kirn showcased his resilience in a thrilling comeback victory over the Wildcats, proving invaluable to his team’s success. Despite a challenging start, including a 10-pitch battle with the first batter that resulted in a walk and a hit batter on his 11th pitch, Kirn displayed remarkable composure. He navigated through a bases-loaded situation expertly and dominated the second and third innings.
"The key is to get a zero, regardless of who’s on base," Kirn emphasized after the game, reflecting on his strategy to maintain focus. Facing a lengthy delay of 2 hours and 41 minutes before the originally scheduled noon start, Kirn shifted gears mentally, preparing himself for the challenge ahead.
Throwing a total of 118 pitches, Kirn continued to thrive even as the game progressed, marking his fourth outing in five starts with over 113 pitches. Head coach Steve Sabins praised Kirn’s tenacity, stating, "He got better from pitch 100 to 117." With this win, the Mountaineers improved to 11-4 in games started by Kirn, highlighting the importance of his performance this season.
