A recent United Nations report reveals that Russia has deployed thousands of North Korean soldiers and weaponry to bolster its military operations in Ukraine, amidst ongoing conflict and “unlawful activities.” The Multilateral Sanctions Monitoring Team (MSMT), which includes members from the U.S., U.K., and Japan, reported that North Korea provided over 11,000 troops and significant military supplies, including 100 ballistic missiles and nearly 9 million rounds of ammunition, which have enhanced Moscow’s missile attacks on Ukrainian cities and vital infrastructure.
In return, Russia is allegedly assisting North Korea’s ballistic missile programs, improving missile guidance systems, and supplying advanced military technology. The report indicates that these actions violate UN Security Council Resolutions, with both nations seemingly committed to advancing their military cooperation despite these breaches.
North Korea confirmed in April that its troops participated in counteroffensive operations alongside Russian forces, contributing to regaining control over parts of the Kursk region. This collaboration stems from a mutual defense treaty signed by Kim Jong-un and Vladimir Putin in June 2024, marking a significant military alliance between the two states.
Meanwhile, the conflict in Ukraine persists, with Russia’s missile and drone strikes resulting in civilian casualties, including children. Although peace talks have been proposed, tensions remain high, as Moscow insists on territorial concessions from Ukraine and demands neutrality from military alliances, which Kyiv views as unacceptable and akin to surrender.
Both nations deny any arms transfers, and the report emphasizes the seriousness of the situation, with substantial casualties on both sides amid Europe’s deadliest conflict since World War II. As peace negotiations continue to be fraught with challenges, the humanitarian crisis deepens further in Ukraine.
