Burned Body Discovered in Georgia’s Stone Mountain Park

A badly burned body of a young man was discovered at Stone Mountain Park in Georgia on Saturday, sparking an investigation by local authorities and the Georgia Bureau of Investigation. The body was found by a hiker around 8:18 a.m. in a location that, while not remote, is seldom hiked. John Bankhead, a spokesperson for the Stone Mountain Department of Public Safety, noted that even frequent hikers are often unaware of this area. The park, known for its prominent Confederate sculpture and various attractions, is located approximately 20 miles east of Atlanta.

An autopsy is scheduled for Monday at the DeKalb County Medical Examiner’s Office to determine the cause of death. Authorities have not yet confirmed the identity of the deceased, but they have a prospective name based on personal belongings found near a parked vehicle in the area.

In addition to the investigation into the body, the DeKalb County Fire Rescue Department is focusing on the fire that occurred in connection with the remains. Bankhead described the situation as “odd” and “peculiar,” noting that park staff with years of experience have not encountered a case like this before.

Stone Mountain Park is operated by a state authority and an amusement park management contractor and has been a focal point for demonstrations due to its Confederate imagery, which has garnered mixed public sentiment since its completion in stages between 1924 and 1972. As the investigation unfolds, authorities are working to piece together the circumstances surrounding the young man’s death.
