West Virginia Upsets No. 11 Clemson in Clemson Regional Showdown
CLEMSON, S.C. — In a thrilling match on Saturday night, West Virginia took down No. 11 national seed Clemson 9-6 in the Clemson Regional, marking a significant upset. Sam White starred for the Mountaineers, going 3 for 5 with two RBIs, while teammate Armani Guzman also contributed two RBIs to secure the victory.
West Virginia jumped out to an early 4-0 lead before Clemson rallied, scoring four runs in the sixth inning to level the game. However, Guzman’s clutch two-out hit in the eighth reclaimed the lead for West Virginia at 5-4. In a decisive ninth inning, the Mountaineers added four runs, highlighted by White’s hit off the right-field wall, which brought home Jorge Valdes. With bases loaded, both Guzman and Skylar King were hit by pitches, extending the lead to 9-5.
Clemson attempted a comeback in the ninth, loading the bases with one run in, but West Virginia’s Ben McDougal struck out Jack Crighton to secure his second save.
