West Virginia Triumphs Over No. 11 Clemson in Regional Clash
CLEMSON, S.C. (AP) – In an exhilarating matchup on Saturday evening, West Virginia secured a 9-6 victory over No. 11 national seed Clemson in the Clemson Regional. Sam White shined offensively, going 3 for 5 with two RBIs, while Armani Guzman contributed another two runs batted in as the Mountaineers improved to 43-14.
West Virginia jumped out to an early 4-0 lead, but Clemson rallied with four runs in the sixth inning. The tension built as Guzman’s important two-out hit in the eighth gave West Virginia a 5-4 edge. In a dramatic ninth inning, the Mountaineers exploded for four more runs, highlighted by White’s drive off the right-field wall, which brought home Jorge Valdes.
Despite rallying with runners on base, Clemson was unable to close the gap, loading the bases before Ben McDougal struck out Jack Crighton for his second save of the season. West Virginia’s Jack Kartsonas struck out seven and allowed just two earned runs over 5 1/3 innings, while Chase Meyer claimed his ninth win of the season. Clemson (45-17) will face Kentucky in a do-or-die matchup on Sunday.
