West Virginia Mountaineers Edge Clemson, One Win Away from Super Regional Berth
Clemson, SC – The West Virginia Mountaineers are on the cusp of making history, just one victory away from advancing to the Super Regional for the second consecutive year. In a thrilling matchup at Doug Kingsmore Stadium, WVU overcame a late-game rally by the host Clemson Tigers to secure a 9-6 victory.
Initially holding a 4-0 lead, WVU saw their advantage slip away when Clemson’s Cam Cannarella hit a two-run homer to spark a comeback. The Tigers briefly took the lead in the seventh inning, but the Mountaineers responded with a clutch eighth-inning double by Armani Guzman to tie the game at five.
The decisive ninth inning saw WVU rally with seven consecutive batters reaching base, capped by Grant Hussey’s walk and a timely double from Sam White, propelling the team to a 9-5 lead. Despite some late-game tension, WVU’s Ben McDougal struck out Clemson’s Jack Crighton to secure the win.
WVU’s pitching standout, Chase Meyer, earned the win, while four players contributed to a powerful 15-hit attack. The Mountaineers look to finalize their Super Regional bid Sunday at 6 p.m. against the winner of the Clemson-Kentucky matchup.
