West Virginia Baseball Advances to Super Regionals with Gritty Victory
Clemson, S.C. — Griffin Kirn stepped up when it mattered most for the West Virginia baseball team, sealing a thrilling 13-12 victory over Kentucky in the NCAA regional opener on Sunday night. After throwing 118 pitches in a prior game, the Quincy Notre Dame graduate was called from the bullpen in a high-pressure ninth inning.
With the Mountaineers rallying back from a deficit, Kirn allowed a single but quickly showcased his prowess by striking out Patrick Herrera and getting Ryan Schwartz to line out, securing his first career save. Earlier in the weekend, Kirn impressed with a stellar 7.1 innings against the same opponent, allowing just one earned run on five hits and recording seven strikeouts.
West Virginia’s comeback included a dramatic six-run eighth inning that pushed them ahead. With this win, the Mountaineers improved to 43-14 and advanced to the super regionals, where they will face the winner of the Baton Rouge Regional. The highly anticipated best-of-three series starts Friday, with LSU and Little Rock competing for a chance to challenge West Virginia.
