Governor Morrisey Promotes Healthy Living with Mobile Kitchen Initiative
Charleston, WV – Governor Patrick Morrisey has launched a campaign aimed at promoting healthier living in West Virginia, focusing on nutrition and exercise. On Monday, he and First Lady Denise Morrisey attended a demonstration of West Virginia Health Right’s new mobile teaching kitchen at the Governor’s Mansion, where site coordinator Shayla Leftridge prepared bayou chicken power bowls using fresh ingredients from the mansion’s garden.
Morrisey emphasized that healthy living starts with nutritious meals, declaring, “Every meal is a choice.” The mobile kitchen will serve 34 underserved counties, offering nutrition education, cooking demonstrations, and health outreach services, including blood pressure checks and diabetes screenings.
West Virginia Health Right CEO Angie Settle reinforced the message, stating, “Food is medicine,” and encouraging affordable, healthy eating.
In March, Morrisey unveiled his “Four Pillars of a Healthy West Virginia,” which includes a ban on harmful food additives, increased access to healthy foods, a state park challenge, and proposed changes to the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) to disallow soda purchases and allow hot food options.
Morrisey stated, “We’re tackling the root causes of poor health,” committing to reforming the state’s food system for better health outcomes.
