West Virginia Lawmaker Arrested for Alleged Terroristic Threats

Martinsburg, WV – Newly elected state lawmaker Joseph de Soto, 61, is facing serious legal repercussions after his arrest on Thursday for making alleged terroristic threats against government officials. The West Virginia State Police initiated the investigation that led to his arrest, which revealed that de Soto had made several intimidating threats directed towards at least one official, reportedly targeting West Virginia Republican Speaker of the House, Roger Hanshaw.

De Soto, who had recently been elected to represent part of Berkeley County as a Republican, won the November election with a significant 72% of the vote, overcoming two challengers in the primary. His abrupt party affiliation change from Republican to Democrat a day prior to his arrest has raised questions about the legality of such a switch, as officials explore whether a candidate can alter their party before officially assuming office.

Republican Party Chair Matt Herridge condemned de Soto’s actions in a statement, emphasizing that threats against elected officials pose a serious hindrance to those dedicated to public service. Herridge stated, "It is a travesty for anyone to face the additional burden of threats made against themselves and their families."

De Soto did not respond to requests for comments following his arrest, and the case remains under investigation. According to Lieutenant Leslie T. Goldie Jr. of the West Virginia State Police, the department takes threats against government processes seriously and will not tolerate actions aimed at intimidating or coercing legislative members.

If convicted, de Soto faces potential penalties that include a maximum fine of $25,000 and three years in prison. The situation continues to unfold as authorities delve deeper into the investigation.
