West Virginia University’s Clay Ash Receives 2025 Tommy Nickolich Memorial Award
MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – April 5, 2025
West Virginia University (WVU) running back Clay Ash has been honored with the prestigious 2025 Tommy Nickolich Memorial Award, awarded annually by Blue & Gold News. This accolade recognizes a walk-on player who exemplifies exceptional attitude and work ethic, and honors the memory of former WVU player Tommy Nickolich, who tragically passed away from cancer in 1983.
Hailing from Leesburg, Virginia, Ash is in his sophomore year and has established himself as a key component on the special teams. Last season, he participated in nine games and logged 37 special teams snaps, showcasing his dedication and improving performance, particularly with a season-high of 10 snaps during the game against Texas Tech.
In addition to his on-field contributions, Ash has excelled academically, earning positions on both the Garrett Ford Academic Honor Roll and the Big 12 Commissioner’s Honor Roll, highlighting his commitment to balancing athletics with academics.
Previous winners of the Nickolich Award include notable athletes such as Avery Wilcox (2024), C.J. Cole (2023), and Nick Malone (2022). Each recipient reflects the values of hard work and perseverance, qualities that define the ethos of WVU football.
As Clay Ash continues to progress in his collegiate football career, his recognition serves as an inspiration to current and future Mountaineers, epitomizing the spirit and dedication that WVU’s athletics stands for.
