State Treasurer Larry Pack Visits Wellsburg to Launch Unclaimed Funds Initiative

BROOKE COUNTY, W.Va. — West Virginia State Treasurer Larry Pack visited Wellsburg on Wednesday to unveil a new state initiative aimed at reuniting residents with unclaimed property tax funds. Pack highlighted that over $400 million belonging to West Virginians is currently unclaimed, urging citizens to check for potential funds owed to them.

"We’re asking everyone to visit the treasurer’s website, enter their name and address, and see if they have any money there," Pack stated. He shared a personal anecdote, revealing that he and his wife, both CPAs, discovered $300 in unclaimed funds despite believing they had none.

Pack attributed the issue to various factors, including changes of address and clerical errors by businesses. He emphasized the need for technological advancements to prevent future discrepancies, stating, "We’re almost a cashless society," which may contribute to lost financial communications.

Residents can easily check for unclaimed funds by visiting the West Virginia State Treasurer’s website, ensuring that rightful owners can reclaim their money.
