West Virginia Cell Phone Bills to Increase for Enhanced Emergency Services
CHARLESTON, W.Va. (WCHS) — Starting July 1, West Virginia cell phone users will experience a bill increase aimed at enhancing emergency services. The West Virginia Public Service Commission has announced a 10.2% rise in the wireless enhanced 911 fee, bringing it from $3.64 to $4.01.
Additionally, customers will incur an 8-cent wireless tower fee and a 29-cent public safety wireless charge, resulting in a total monthly hike of $4.38. These fees, legislated by state lawmakers, will be reviewed and could change every two years.
The funds collected through these fees will be managed by the Public Service Commission, which will allocate them to counties based on usage. This increase emphasizes the state’s commitment to improving emergency response capabilities, ensuring swift communication during critical situations. As West Virginians prepare for the hike, regulatory officials affirm that these changes are crucial for maintaining and upgrading the state’s emergency services infrastructure.
