Final Paving of Panhandle Recreation Trail Completed
Weirton, WV – A long-awaited milestone has been achieved with the completion of the final paving section of the Panhandle Recreation Trail. Managed by the Weirton Board of Parks and Recreation, the project has benefited from years of volunteer support, transforming a former rail line into a vibrant recreational path.
Residing near the trail, many locals fondly recall the sound of trains in the area and subsequent biking experiences along the corridor. As popularity has increased, the once quiet trail now attracts walkers and cyclists year-round, evidenced by the full parking lot at the U.S. 22 trail station.
The new paved surfaces enhance accessibility, mirroring Pennsylvania’s paved sections and offering seamless connectivity within a broader trail network extending into Maryland. While many residents have noted a rise in trail users since the work was completed, some express concern that the paved surface may deter walkers.
However, options remain on either side of the path for those preferring natural terrain. Transitioning to this new surface may require some adjustment, but it signifies progress for the community’s outdoor recreational offerings. The development aims to draw more visitors and promote active lifestyles in the area.
