West Virginia Struggles in Middle Innings, Loses Game One to LSU

West Virginia Falls to LSU in Super Regional Opener

West Virginia faced a daunting challenge in game one of the Super Regional against No. 6 LSU, contending with Kade Anderson, a highly touted MLB Draft prospect. The Mountaineers held their ground early but faltered dramatically in the middle innings, ultimately losing 16-9 at Alex Box Stadium.

West Virginia’s pitching struggles were evident as they surrendered 16 runs, with a staggering 11 of those runs coming from walks or hit-by-pitches. The turning point occurred in the fifth inning when head coach Steve Sabins replaced starter Griffin Kirn—who had already thrown 82 pitches—allowing LSU to capitalize. Reliever JJ Glasscock faced challenges, and Cole Fehrman allowed a grand slam to Steven Milam, propelling LSU into a commanding 10-1 lead.

Despite the offensive efforts from the Mountaineers, including a strong sixth inning where they scored four runs, LSU’s relentless offense kept pressure on. With eight walks given up, West Virginia struggled to find their rhythm on the mound.

Game two is set for Sunday at 6:00 p.m. A win will push the series to a decisive game three, while a loss will eliminate West Virginia from contention for the College World Series.
