Press Release: Over 200 Students Honored as Golden Horseshoe Knights and Ladies
CHARLESTON, W.Va. — Continuing a tradition that began in 1931, over 200 eighth graders from across West Virginia were honored as Knights and Ladies of the prestigious Golden Horseshoe on Tuesday. Hosted by the West Virginia Department of Education at the Culture Center, this annual event celebrates students excelling in state history and social studies.
WVDE Student Enrichment Programs Coordinator Dustin Lambert emphasized the unique significance of the Golden Horseshoe, noting, "No other state has a competition with a history quite like ours." This award commemorates the legacy initiated by Governor Alexander Spotswood in the early 1700s, who bestowed golden horseshoes to explorers crossing the Alleghenies.
Students received a small horseshoe pin and the honor of being knighted, with many expressing pride in their achievement. Among the recipients, Alexis Miller from Braxton County Middle School acknowledged the hard work leading to this title, while Kayleigh Jo Mays of Madison Middle School celebrated continuing a family tradition, as she became the eighth recipient in her family.
With the Golden Horseshoe’s longstanding legacy, families look forward to passing this honor to future generations, ensuring that the pride of West Virginia heritage endures.
