Doug Skaff Jr. Passes Away at 48 Following Accident on I-79

CHARLESTON, W.Va. — Doug Skaff Jr., a prominent West Virginia newspaper executive and former legislative leader, tragically died on Tuesday at the age of 48 due to an accident on Interstate 79. Skaff was president of HD Media, overseeing the publication of several state newspapers, including the Charleston Gazette-Mail. The Gazette-Mail confirmed his passing on its website.

Details surrounding the accident remain scarce, and state police have not released further information.

Skaff served nearly 11 years in the West Virginia House of Delegates, where he represented Kanawha County. After resigning in 2023, he switched parties to the Republican side before an unsuccessful bid for secretary of state in 2024. He also held the position of interim executive director of the West Virginia Press Association and was involved in a recent restaurant purchase in Charleston, with plans to run for state Senate in the upcoming year.

West Virginia Governor Patrick Morrisey expressed his condolences, highlighting Skaff’s significant impact on the community and his role as a dedicated public servant. Skaff is survived by his wife and three sons, leaving behind a legacy of friendship and commitment to his family.
