MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Meet West Virginia University’s Marathon Coach
In an intriguing intersection of sports, Ryan Nehlen, assistant wide receivers coach at West Virginia University, has made headlines by qualifying for the 130th Boston Marathon after running the Buffalo Marathon with a time that exceeded the qualifying standard by four minutes. Scheduled for April 20, 2026, the Boston Marathon is one of the most prestigious races in the world.
Nehlen, who is no stranger to the rigorous demands of college athletics, originally began serious running during the COVID-19 pandemic. “I wanted to stay competitive and maintain a healthy lifestyle,” he shared, reflecting on how the shutdown led him to pursue marathons. With a background in college football as a wide receiver, he has kept himself fit throughout his coaching career, which has included stints at various universities before returning to WVU.
Despite the demands of coaching, Nehlen remains committed to his training, averaging around 55 miles weekly. He believes that maintaining peak physical condition enhances his coaching abilities, allowing him to demonstrate the work ethic he instills in his players.
Nehlen also enjoys his daily six-mile runs around the WVU campus, appreciating the therapeutic aspects of distance running. Nevertheless, he acknowledges the challenges of balancing marathon training with the hectic football season. His loved ones, including his wife and daughters, remain a top priority alongside his coaching and running aspirations.
As he prepares to make his Boston Marathon debut, Nehlen exemplifies the harmony of athletic dedication and professional responsibilities, showcasing that pursuing personal goals can coexist with a demanding career. “I’m still new to [marathoning] and excited about improving,” he says, setting the stage for future accomplishments.
