Mayo Clinic and ASU Develop Rapid Test for Valley Fever Amid Rising Cases in Arizona
PHOENIX – Valley fever poses a significant threat to thousands of Arizonans each year, as the fungus responsible thrives in the region’s desert landscape. In response to this growing health concern, Mayo Clinic and Arizona State University (ASU) have collaborated to create innovative technology aimed at enhancing the detection of this potentially deadly infection.
Chris Sams, a local resident and valley fever patient, shared his harrowing experience. Initially unaware of his condition, Sams faced a mysterious illness that caused significant weight loss, leading to a hospital visit. After a frustrating search for a diagnosis, he learned he had valley fever, which progressed to severely impact his spine and brain. “It was already serious by the time they diagnosed it,” he reflected.
According to Thomas Grys, Director of Clinical Microbiology at Mayo Clinic of Arizona, the average diagnostic wait time for valley fever is 23 days. Misdiagnosis is common due to the similarities between valley fever symptoms and other respiratory illnesses like COVID-19. Traditional testing adds to the delay, often leading healthcare providers to forgo ordering crucial tests.
In light of these challenges, Grys and his team developed a rapid blood test for valley fever, akin to the rapid COVID tests. Patients will receive results within ten minutes of having their blood drawn, significantly reducing diagnosis time.
Sams, who credits Mayo Clinic for saving his life, expressed hope for the new test, stating, “It’s going to be life-changing.” The team anticipates making this rapid test available by the end of the year, potentially benefiting both humans and animals.
